In honor of National Safe Boating Week, we’re encouraging boaters to stay safe by wearing life jackets any time they head out on the water. You might already have your own, which is great, but maybe you forgot to bring it, or you have more people coming aboard than you had anticipated. That’s where our nationwide Life Jacket Loaner program comes in and we wanted to highlight it for boaters now and year-round.
If you’re not familiar, the Sea Tow Foundation’s Life Jacket Loaner program supports stations that provide loaner life jackets for boaters to borrow and return, at no charge. Our stations are equipped with life jackets manufactured by our friends at Onyx Outdoor and they range in size from infant to adult XL so that each passenger on your vessel can be prepared for safe and fun boating.
We’re proud of the success of our program and are very enthusiastic about watching it grow over the last decade. In fact, as we completed our 2018 annual report, we received numerous stories illustrating how life jackets from our loaner stations helped save lives and promoted boater safety across the country. From incidences of an overturned kayaker to a capsized vessel, our life jackets have been there for safety and peace of mind.
Here are some of our successes with the program by the numbers:
- 575 Life Jacket Loaner Stations
- Located in 42 states
- At least 26 new Life Jacket Loaner Stations opening in 2019
- More than 50,000 life jackets provided at Life Jacket Loaner Stations
- Over 200 hosts and partners that help support the Life Jacket Loaner program
Are you planning to head out on the water this week? We hope you’ll take advantage of our program if you don’t have access to your own life jackets. Check out this list of locations where you can pick up a loaner life jacket for the day. Most states require a life jacket for each member aboard your vessel, so make sure you’re prepared each time you head out to your favorite waters with friends and family.
And if you’re a local business or organization involved in the boating industry, consider partnering with the Sea Tow Foundation to sponsor or help maintain a Life Jacket Loaner Station in your community. Details can be found here.
